From November 27 to December 1, Prof. B?hr, the Chair and Professor of Neurology of University Medical Center of G?ttingen visits Jiangmen Wuyi Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine as an international visiting professor, carrying out academic activities including outpatient consultation, ward rounds, internal lectures, internal training on management, difficult case discussion, public lecture and so on.

Welcome Ceremony

On the morning of November 27, MA Shaofeng, the Deputy Party Secretary and Hospital President, ZHANG Guanghua and YU Shangzhen, Vice Hospital Presidents, chiefs of administrative departments, SHI Qing, chief of Neurology and the team of Neurology held a welcome ceremony for Prof. B?hr. Both parties gave insights in hospital management and development of neurology.

YU Shangzhen, Vice Hospital President gave a speech expressing warm welcome to Prof. B?hr and expectations about this visit. She hopes that all colleagues involved could cherish the rare opportunity for academic exchanges, actively participate into all the activities, continuously improve their professional expertise, align themselves with the international standard of modern medicine, and promote the development of traditional Chinese medicine, and that SHI Qing could have in-depth discussions with Prof. B?hr on the current status of the development of Neurology of Jiangmen Wuyi Hospital of TCM, explore the future development trend of the specialty, and continue to promote the clinical care and scientific output, helping the certified national clinical key specialty to reach new heights.

MA Shaofeng, the Deputy Party Secretary and Hospital President presented Prof. B?hr with the letter-of-appointment of visiting professor and an  album commemorating the 65th anniversary of the hospital.

The ceremony was moderated by LI Xiaoying, Director of Dept. of Organization and Human Resources of Jiangmen Wuyi Hospital of TCM. Dr. GUO Fu from Dept. of Neurology gave a presentation on the introduction of the hospital and its neurology.

Prof. B?hr gave a detailed introduction of the University Medical Center of G?ttingen and the Department of Neurology led by him. The University of G?ttingen is an internationally renowned research university. Founded in 1737 in the Age of Enlightenment, it is committed to the values of social responsibility of science, democracy, tolerance and justice. 74 Nobel Prize Winners had contributed to the development of the University. The University Medical Center of G?ttingen (UMG) includes both the Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital. It is one of the largest and most research-oriented hospital and educational facilities in Germany.There are 140 professors, 3,700 students and 7,900 employees at UMG. It has a annual care turnover of around 500 million euros, 160 million euros support from the state and 60 million euros from third-party funding. It receives around 65,000 inpatients and 225,000 outpatients annually and provides medical services for 3.2 million people. There are two German National Health Centers in G?ttingen - the G?ttingen site of German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK) and the G?ttingen site of German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE).

Prof. B?hr hopes to take this visit as an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the application of traditional Chinese medicine in clinical care and scientific research in neurology, and to further cooperate with Jiangmen Wuyi Hospital of TCM in specialty development and talent training.

Case Discussion

On the morning of November 28th, Prof.B?hr took part in case discussion and ward round at Dept. of Neurology of Jiangmen Wuyi Hospital of TCM. With the moderation of SHI Qing, chief of Neurology, Dr. GUO Fu, Dr. OU Fengjuan, and Dr. LUO Rongqing respectively reported a case of multiple sclerosis, a possible case of Herpes simplex encephalitis, and a case of oculomotor nerve palsy. Prof. B?hr gave detailed analysis of each case, provided guidance on clinical examinations and suggestions for further treatment plan.

Updates in Research

On the afternoon of November 28th, Prof. B?hr visited the laboratory of Jiangmen Wuyi Hospital of TCM. Dr. Liu Jinman and Dr. Hu Shaowen. Postdoc fellows from the Department of Neurology presented their research progress on behalf of the team, with the topics of "Integrative Research on Alzheimer's Disease: Bridging Traditional Chinese Medicine and Genomics Technology" and "Mechanism research on the therapeutic effect of acupuncture on dementia".

Prof. B?hr gave insightful advice and had heated discussion with the attendees based on the resources, clinical focus and research focus of Jiangmen Wuyi Hospital of TCM.

Joint Outpatient Consultation

On the morning of November 29th, Prof. B?hr offered consultation for the outpatients jointly with YU Shanzhen, Vice Hospital President and SHI Qing, chief of Neurology.

Six outpatients registered for the joint consultation including patients with Multiple Sclerosis, Huntington's Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, etc. Prof. B?hr conducted detailed clinical examination on each patient, evaluated the efficacy of the current treatment plan, offered advice on further treatment plan and shares the latest updates in treatment options with the neurology team.

Training on Department Organization and Management

On the afternoon of November 29, an international training on management was held moderated by YU Shangzhen, Vice Hospital President. SHI Qing, chief of Neurology, gave a report on the current status and vision on further development of the Dept. of Neurology.

After which, Prof. B?hr gave an internal lecture titled Talent Screening and Development, sharing his insights in talent screening, career pathways for clinicians, scientists, and clinician-scientists, etc. The team of Neurology had a thorough discussion with Prof. B?hr on questions with regards to department organization, talent training, etc. they encounter during their daily work.

Lectures from the Master

On the morning of November 30, Prof. B?hr gave an internal lecture themed Functional Neuroanatomy. The meeting was moderated by YU Shangzhen, Vice Hospital Presiden of Jiangmen Wuyi Hospital of TCM. The book Topical Diagnosis in Neurology: Anatomy, Function, Clinic written by Prof. B?hr has gone through eleven editions and has been translated into over fourteen languages, making it an essential reference book for neurologists.

Prof. B?hr pointed out that a precise topical localization from clinical examination is the basic skill for a neurologist, which is an efficient use of time and costly imaging check and benefits patients more.

Prof. B?hr gave a detailed lecture on how to localize the lesions from the patient history and clinical examination with cases relevant to the the motor system and brainstem, higher cortical functions and limbic system. In her summary, YU Shangzhen insisted that neurologists must have detailed knowledge about neuroanatomy and be able to give hypothesis about potential lesion location followed by focused (imaging/electrophysiological) diagnostics.

On the afternoon of November 30, Prof. B?hr gave a hospital-wide public lecture on the application of functional imaging in clinical research. The meeting was moderated by YU Shangzhen, Vice Hospital Presiden of Jiangmen Wuyi Hospital of TCM. The attendees include the postdoc fellows and doctoral candidates from all departments and team of Neurology. Prof. B?hr shares the progress of research in this field by applying the newly developed real-time MRI at the Heart and Brain Center G?ttingen. Prof. B?hr summarized that they envision to monitor onset, progression and therapy response in neurodegenerative disorders via combination of clinical assessment and innovative (MR-based) imaging.

China Office of Prof. B?hr - Member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina

On December 1, the Inauguration Ceremony of China Office of Prof. B?hr - Member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina was held at Jiangmen Wuyi Hospital of TCM.

The attendees include Ms Chen Zhimei, Deputy Director of the Dept. of Organization on Jiangmen Municipal Party Committee and the Director of Jiangmen Municipal Bureau of Talent, Mr. Huang Ruilou, Member of Party Committee and Deputy Director of Jiangmen Municipal Bureau of Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, Mr. Pang Jinshan, Member of Party Committee and Deputy Director of Jiangmen Municipal Bureau of Science and Technology, Mr, Li Zhigang, Deputy Director of Office of International Affairs of Jiangmen Municipal Party Committee, Mr. Liang Nanling, Member of Party Committee and Deputy Director of Jiangmen Municipal Bureau of Health, Mr. Ma Shaofeng, Hospital President of Jiangmen Wuyi Hospital of TCM. The ceremony was started by a welcome address by YU Shangzhen and moderated by SHI Qing.

Prof. B?hr gave a public lecture titled The Role of Autoantibodies in Parkinson’s Disease sharing the updates of research in pathogenicity of Parkinson’s Disease.

This is the first China Office of fellow of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in Guangdong Province, and will play an important leading and driving role in medical, scientific research, and academic exchanges between both parties, helping to promote the level of neurology of the hospital and of Jiangmen to be in line with international standards, enhance their international image and influence.
